ALL HAIL THE QUEENS!
so lets talk about this the 2016 Hip Hop Honor's Special! After a six year hiatus the creators of this much needed special approached it with a different twist. In the past the yearly Hip Hop Honors Special has focused predominately on the men in the industry, so it was well over due to honor the women of HIP HOP!
The honorees of the evening included Salt n Peppa featuring DJ Spinderella ,Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, and Lil' Kim.
The show opened with an explosive performance honoring the creative style of Missy Elliott. Remy Ma, Nelly Furtado, Eve, Lil Moe, and Trina represented as they rapped some of Missy's popular hits! A much needed dance brake-down was strategically placed between the songs. You really can't honor Missy Elliott without dancers but where was Ciara to shut it down with her moves? But we will get back to what was missing later.
What was great?
Eve did beyond than great as the host of the night!
Thank you Eve, Dreezy, Keke Palmer and Ashanti for giving life to Salt n Papa's hits. Ashanti even stepped her dancing game up!
When it was time to honor the Queen B Notorious K.I.M, artist Teyana Taylor Shut it down. The outfits and wigs added to the look but during her performance she channeled the hell out of Kim. Lil' Mama brought the energy but when I seen Teyana Taylor I seen KIM!
The positivity and unity was apparent throughout the entire show. The closing preformance of U.N.I.T.Y sybolized that the most. Showing the importance of woman supporting each another in a 43 year old genre of music that is still dominated by men.
You can't top a message from the First Lady Michelle Obama either, which incorporated how these honoree's are giving back to the community.
I said I would get back what was missing.....
What was not so great?
Fast Forward to Lil Kim's performance herself........ Kim you are a legend but why you forgetting your own words? I guess you are getting old.
And everyone can't stop talking about Rick Homie Quan and his buchered version on Notorious B.I.G's verse. He has since responded in a interview with TMZ stating he practiced but when the words failed to show up on a TelePrompTer he's nerves got the best of him.He also admitted growing up in the south he did not really grow up on Bigge's music and the only song he really knows lyric by lyric was "Juicy".
Amber Rose could have been left out. I guess they needed to through her in somewhere to promote her new show coming to VH1.
Where was Foxy Brown? Where was Nikki Minaj? How was MC Lyte not a featured honoree? Who else would have loved to see "Ladies Night" preformed?
I'm looking forward to next years show...overall this years Show gets a B+
