Taking Our Children Back: Muhammad University of Islam

Muhammad University of Islam  (MUI) is a indepedent religious and educational institution. Most who have heard of MUI are familiar with its Chicago location that was originally established in early 1930’s by Master Fard Muhammad and the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and then re-established in 1989 by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Fast forward years later the profound academic institution has now broke ground in Newark, NJ and will be celebrating its 1- year anniversary in September 2018. The active Director Caleb Muhammad was approached and asked for his assistance to charter a school in Newark, NJ. Very excited about the offer Brother Caleb agreed to help but under one condition; he wanted all the local cities that have an active Mosque to be apart of the school’s planning and development. Once in agreement that every Mosque in the area would be given the opportunity to have a role in some aspect, the planning and development began.   Director Caleb G A Muhammad and Assistant Director Al-Nisa Muhammad planned a 4-day trip to Chicago to visit Muhammad University of Islam Chicago. While there Brother Caleb and Sister Al-Nisa interviewed the Director of MUI-Chicago Brother Jason Karriem, asking every question imaginable on how to charter such a school in New Jersey. The soon to be Directors took in every moment to sit in on classes, speak to teachers, review schedules and review curriculums. All this new discovered knowledge was then taken back to New Jersey and used as a blueprint during the development process of MUI NJ.
The school actually opened its doors to the community on September 12, 2017 and in its first year has enrolled 30 students and a staff of 12 and counting. MUI NJ offers grades Pre-K to 5th grade and welcomes all religions to enroll.             “(We are) a school, but what (also) makes the school is the discipline that is attached to it so, we open every morning with military drill so (the children) know how to follow directions because that is something that we give them,” explained Brother Caleb.  The curriculum includes Mathematics, Science, Geometry, Geography, History, Language- Arts, Spelling, and Islamic Studies. The school also offers an After –Care Program. Soon to come the school will be adding a Spanish course and Enrichment Programs. The school is set up to breed leaders as each student is pushed and encouraged to master the work of 2 grade levels beyond their actual grade.             “At the school everything is centered around being infinite, I think the biggest piece is seeing the children have no limits, they can go beyond anything they want,” shared Brother Caleb.

“At the root of every civilization is a knowledge inherent in which is an idea that gives energy and direction to that knowledge but if that idea at the root of that knowledge in civilization is finite then the world that comes as a result of that knowledge is also finite, it has an end. So, if you’re pulling on the wisdom of God which is infinite then there is no limit to what a child can achieve”

- Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan

The school itself is truly catered to the all around development of students without all the “noise” and issues one might face in public school setting. With all that is going on in the world there is an absolute need for independent schools where people believe and love our children. I leave you with three words Director Caleb Muhammad uses to describe Muhammad University of Islam New Jersey.
1. Discipline- “The greater the discipline the greater the success” –The        Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan

2.Mastering-  “A master is someone that can do something so well he can not do it wrong”- Director Caleb Muhammad

3. Civilization- “(The School) is a place we want to embody culture, refinement, and overall beauty when it comes to education - Director Caleb Muhammad
